Debating at Marling School

The first debate of the Marling debating Society took place in 1911. Building upon this heritage the society has a thriving attendance across the year groups 7-13. Debating encourages fluency and ingenuity, attributes that can be applied to Marling School debaters of all ages. We regularly enter school debating competitions at prestigious institutions such as the Oxford and Cambridge Union as well as notable schools such as Westminster and Eton along with local events. The boys are taught the British Parliamentary format from Yr. 7 along with ESU Mace and ESU Public Speaking. In the sixth form opportunities occur for European and World events with Marling having three successful GB teams. Debating at Marling has not only allowed the boys to demonstrate their oratorical skills but has imbued them with a sense of confidence and self-worth in a huge variety of social situations. They see themselves as firstly a team, but secondly as representatives of the school and the very foundations on which it was established.  Debating has a proud tradition at Marling and we welcome new members to continue legacy.
