Meet the Head

Our school motto is Abeunt Studia in Mores which we translate to mean “Let us go forward through study to character” or more simply put “What you learn here will shape your actions in life”. We aim that Marling students should learn to be independent thinkers who take responsibility for their learning and their success, who believe in freedom and equality and should join society as men of principles taking an interest in the world around them. We set out to achieve this through our mission statement: Raising Aspirations, Inspiring Excellence, Succeeding Together.

Welcome to Marling School - a boys’ 11-18 selective school

Marling School is a highly successful 11-18 grammar school for boys with a long and proud tradition of academic excellence. We are ambitious for our students and they thrive in a vibrant academic environment that provides pace, challenge and support. We place a high value on the development of skills alongside knowledge; so that our students become active learners achieving success at school, but are also prepared for further education and for their place in an increasingly global society.

As you would expect, our exam results are outstanding. In 2016, 66% of grades at A level were awarded A*-B grades, and our value added placed us in the top 25% of A level providers nationally. 44% of university places accepted were in the most selective universities including four students that joined Oxford and Cambridge Universities. At GCSE in 2016, 94% of all the GCSE exams our boys sat were at A*-C grades with 47% being at the higher A*-A grades; 71% of students achieved 8 or more A* to B grades and 30% of students achieved 8 or more A* to A grades.

Of course, school is not all about exams. At Marling School we provide our students with a rich variety of opportunities to support their personal development. We know that each one of our students is unique and we work hard to recognise and develop their gifts and talents to ensure that they reach their full potential. We offer a vast array of clubs, activities and educational visits from music and sport, science and engineering, to drama and debating. Boys at Marling School are supported and challenged in and out of the classroom. They lead our house system and our school council. They support each other as coaches and peer mentors and represent the school with pride as musicians, sportsmen, singers, actors, debaters, mathematicians and engineers. Our younger students benefit enormously from time spent with our 6th form students helping them develop their confidence and their skills. Throughout their time at school the boys are supported by a strong and effective pastoral team of tutors, year heads and heads of key stage.

The school is steeped in history with some historic buildings dating back to 1887. The boys tell me they are proud of this heritage and feel part of something special. However, we continue to invest in their future and improve the facilities to support their aspirations. A new IT suite and computing laboratory were added in 2012 and two new science laboratories were opened in 2013 providing the school with 9 laboratories in total. In 2016 we opened a £3.7 million building for Mathematics, Geography and Religious Education and including a superb dining facility for the boys. In 2017 we opened a £1 million Creative Arts block with facilities for Art and Drama.

Whether you are a current or prospective student or parent, Old Marlingtonian, potential member of staff or a casual browser taking an interest in the school I welcome you to this website and trust that you will find it a useful source of information.
